Students may now access the social studies text online. They have individual accounts where they can look at the text and resources used in class. This will help them complete their homework each week. Students logins are their first initial and last name@campus. For example, jcordero@campus would be my username and campus is the password for everyone.
gallopadelogin.webreader.io/#!/login We had an excellent beginning to the year! Students have already been introduced to our first novel, Esperanza Rising, and our first Social Studies unit of Tennessee History. They also began writing their first short stories. I think we can expect great things from our young people this year.
Students may purchase their own copy of Esperanza Rising, but it is not required. www.amazon.com/Esperanza-Rising-McDougal-Littell-Library/dp/043912042X/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3R4WUUXLMVZKB&keywords=esperanza+rising&qid=1566149259&s=gateway&sprefix=esper%2Caps%2C192&sr=8-1 Meet the teacher is Friday, August 9 from 1:00-2:00. Class lists will be posted outside shortly before 1:00. If you ordered supply boxes, they will be placed in classrooms. If you are bringing your own, please do not label folders, composition books, or spirals. Because of color coding needs, these often get shuffled around from class to class. We look forward to meeting you Friday! Join our 5th grade private Facebook group at:
www.facebook.com/groups/campustigers/ All students will need headphones upon returning to school. Earbuds or over-ear headphones are fine. We will be doing a lot of work on technology requiring students to access links with sound. Please Sharpie names on the headphones. Thanks!
Homeroom Only Information:

Class List Daphne Lillian Ben Miles Hayden Frank Arya Lena Kate Eli Noah Deniz Jackson Mark Mary Carter Kara Aura Bennett Minha Jane Liana Lily Chaderian Lia Stephen Luke Brennan Beginning this week, homework has been adjusted to include TCAP Prep assignments. I talked with the students and we came up with a way to work in the extra assignments without just adding extra homework. So, from this point forward, students will have ONE Achieve3000 lesson, the CHOPPED story, and ONE social studies worksheet. Additionally, students will have until next Friday to complete the first 4 lessons in the Measuring Up workbook. For small group students (non-CLUE), we will complete Lessons 1 and 2 in class. All students will also be given 15 minutes daily to complete lessons in class. We will try this for a week and see how it goes. Parents, this a great opportunity for you to help your child at home. Please feel free to work with them on the lessons. During class Friday, I will go over the answers with all students so they can check their work and have the chance to ask questions.
So far--At least 10 lessons at 80%--Yay!
1. Liana 2. Teresa 3. Zoha 4. Junwon 5. Minha Achieve3000 Contest--Students are not required to complete Achieve3000 over the break. However, we are having a contest. To qualify for the contest, students must meet this criteria: 1. Complete a minimum of 10 lessons. 2. Lessons must be passed at 80% or above. The top 4 students with the highest number of lessons completed at 80% or above will win a lunch from the University Center (on me). The contest starts Friday, October 5 and ends Friday, October 19 at 10 p.m.
Research Journal--All students will need a journal to put research in upon our return. I have plenty of plain spiral bound notebooks and composition books. However, students are welcome to bring a special journal for this research. Books on the Rainforest--We will be studying the rainforest throughout the second quarter. Students will conduct research from a variety of sources. I will have some of these materials in the classroom, but students may wish to gather other resources. The only homework for my class over the next two weeks is Achieve3000. Students should complete 3 lessons each week.
Beginning this week, all students must complete two lessons using the Achieve3000 program. To access the program, students should log into their Clever account. The link to this is under the link tab at the top of this page.
Students must complete the first 5 tabs ( white/dark orange) to receive credit for the lessons. Students may choose any lesson that is available for them. All lessons should be done between Friday and Thursday night. After midnight Thursday, the week resets. Update: We did it! Thank you to everyone who gave to this project!!!
This will be the last project for my class this year. We are trying to revamp our indoor recess activities and games. I asked each student to give me ideas and I was able to incorporate over 90% of their amazing ideas into this project. Please share with anyone who may be interested. Thanks! We have a project to receive a classroom set of a fantastic social studies/history resource. Please share!
Our school supply list is very comprehensive and should keep you from having to buy basic supplies throughout the year. However, there are a few items that are not required, but are incredibly helpful to purchase.
Books Students will have a copy of each book to use in class. They are welcome to use post-it notes for annotation, but will not be able to write in the book. If you would like for your child to have their own copy, that is perfectly fine. One request: PLEASE DO NOT LET THEM READ IT AHEAD OF TIME. Though it is impossible to use books in class that no one has read, there is something magical about watching kids unravel the text as we move along. Throughout the year, Mrs. Cassidy and I will post pictures, important updates, and resources. This group is only for 5th grade parents (or grandparents, relatives, etc.). It does not replace our classroom blogs. If you would like to join, please follow this link:
www.facebook.com/groups/1682059855223737/ There will be a celebration of remembrance for Mrs. Jackson, Friday, May 4, at 8:15 at the U of M Field House. All are welcome to attend.
